How to Lower Your Home Energy Bill: 10 Steps That Actually Work
Your energy bill is the one household expense you can shrink without giving anything up. No subscription to cancel, no habit to break — just a handful of mechanical upgrades and a few routines that take minutes to set up. This guide walks you through ten steps, ordered so that the cheapest wins come first. Most households cut their electric bill by 10–25 % by step seven.
The method is the same as any good audit: find out what you actually pay for, cut what you do not use, and measure the result. That habit of measuring pays for itself fast, as anyone who has tracked home energy production and consumption with a real monitor can tell you.
Step 1: Find your baseline
You cannot improve what you do not measure. Read your meter at the same time every week — Monday morning, before you use anything — and write the number down. Subtract last week’s reading and you get your kWh per day, which is the only number that matters for comparisons.
Two weeks of readings give you a baseline. If you live in a flat or house with an online meter portal, even better: most providers show hourly data. Whatever you use, the goal is a chart of your own consumption. Every change below should be measured against it, not against a feeling of “using less”.
Step 2: Kill standby power
The classic vampire load. TVs, game consoles, set-top boxes, chargers left plugged in, routers, desk speakers and coffee machines draw power all day even when “off”. A typical household loses 5–10 % of its bill to standby power alone.
The fix is cheap and mechanical:
- Put a power strip on your TV, console and speaker group, and switch it off at night.
- Unplug chargers that are not charging — they draw a small current even with nothing attached.
- Check whether your devices have a “power saving” mode; enable it.

Step 3: Heat and cool the room, not the street
Heating and cooling are 40–60 % of a typical energy bill, so this is where the big money is:
- Lower the thermostat by 1–2 °C. Each degree is roughly 5–7 % of your heating energy. Nobody notices 1 °C; your bill does.
- Close curtains at night, open them on sunny days. Old-fashioned and free.
- Seal drafts. Door strips and window seals are cheap, and a drafty home loses a lot of heat.
- Radiators: keep them clear of curtains and furniture, and bleed air out at the start of the season.
- Use a ceiling fan with the thermostat. In summer, a fan lets you set the AC 2–3 °C higher with the same comfort.
- Close doors to unused rooms and let the thermostat follow the room you are actually in.
Step 4: Switch everything to LED
If you still have even one incandescent or halogen bulb, this is the single easiest win: LEDs use roughly 85 % less electricity and last 10–20 times longer. Replace the bulbs you use most first — kitchen, living room, bathroom — and work outward from there. Dimmable LEDs and a smart plug or switch let you set a schedule, but even a plain LED is a win with zero setup.
Step 5: Change how you wash
Laundry and dishes are the most wasteful daily routines:
- Wash on cold. Modern detergents work fine at 20–30 °C, and heating the water is most of the energy a washing machine uses.
- Full loads only. A half-loaded cycle costs almost as much as a full one.
- Air dry when you can. A tumble dryer typically costs more per load than the washer does.
- Run the dishwasher instead of washing by hand. A modern dishwasher uses 15–20 % of the water a hand wash uses, and it heats the water more efficiently. Run it only when full and skip the heated dry cycle.
- Clean the dryer lint filter every load — a clogged filter makes the dryer run longer.
Step 6: Set your appliances right
- Fridge: 3–5 °C. Freezer: −18 °C. Colder costs real money and keeps nothing fresher.
- Check the door seals. A slack seal makes the compressor run constantly; test with a strip of paper that should resist when you pull it.
- Defrost the freezer if ice builds up — more than a few millimeters is insulation, not cold.
- Use the kettle, not the stove for boiling water; and boil only what you need.
- Use your oven’s residual heat: turn it off 5 minutes before the food is done.
Step 7: Rethink hot water
Water heating is usually the second- or third-largest load, after space heating:
- Shorter showers. A 5-minute shower at a normal flow uses about half the energy of a 10-minute one. A cheap shower timer does the nagging for you.
- A low-flow shower head cuts the hot water you use without changing the shower feeling.
- Set the water heater to 55–60 °C unless your manual says otherwise — you do not need scalding water.
- Insulate the hot water pipes in unheated spaces if they run through a basement or crawl space.
Step 8: Measure the real numbers
Guessing ends when you can see the data. You do not need a full setup at day one. A single smart plug with energy monitoring on your fridge, your TV group, or your computer draws almost nothing and tells you exactly what each one costs per month. That number is usually the motivation to act.
Step 9: Automate the boring parts
Once you know your loads, let devices do the work: schedule the water heater for the hours you actually need hot water, switch the TV group off automatically at night, and run the fridge’s defrost cycle while you sleep. Most of this is possible with smart plugs and a schedule, no new infrastructure needed. Step 10: Review monthly, like any audit
