How to Speed Up Your Wi-Fi: 10 Fixes That Actually Work


You know the feeling: the video buffers, the video call freezes, the game lags, and the laptop in the bedroom refuses to load a single email. Almost everyone assumes slow Wi-Fi means they need a new router or a faster internet plan. Usually, that is wrong. In most homes the problem is placement, configuration, or a few hungry devices — and the fixes are free.

Here are ten things to try, ordered from the quickest and cheapest to the more involved. Try them in order; for most people, steps 1 to 5 solve the majority of the problem.

Step 1: Restart the router properly

The classic “turn it off and on again” deserves a place first because it genuinely works — not as voodoo, but because routers run small computers that accumulate memory leaks and stale connections over weeks of continuous work.

Do it properly:

  1. Unplug the router from the power socket.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds — this lets capacitors drain and the device fully shut down.
  3. Plug it back in and wait two minutes for every light to settle.
  4. Test again before doing anything else.

If the connection improves but degrades again after a week, a scheduled restart once a week (most routers have this in their settings) keeps the network fresh automatically.

Step 2: Move the router to a better spot

The physical position of the router matters more than almost every setting on it. Wi-Fi signals travel badly through walls, and some materials stop them dead:

  • Central placement — put the router as close to the middle of the home as possible, not in a corner or a closet.
  • Elevate it — a bookshelf or the top of a cabinet works better than the floor, where furniture and concrete absorb the signal.
  • Avoid metal and water — radiators, fish tanks, and metallic shelving all block radio waves.
  • Keep it away from the kitchen — especially away from the microwave: it operates on the same 2.4 GHz band as Wi-Fi.

If your router sits inside a cupboard or behind the TV, moving it 2–3 meters is often worth more than a new device.

Step 3: Test the speed at the router itself

Before blaming the Wi-Fi, find out what your internet plan is actually delivering. Run a speed test on a laptop connected with a cable directly to the router, or on a phone sitting next to the router.

  • If the wired speed matches your plan, the problem is Wi-Fi — the steps below apply.
  • If the wired speed is far below your plan, the problem is at the provider level: your plan, the cable, or the line. In that case, contact your ISP first — no router setting will fix it.

This single test saves a lot of wasted troubleshooting and, in many cases, wasted money on equipment you do not need.

Step 4: Use 5 GHz for speed, 2.4 GHz for range

Every modern router broadcasts two bands, and the difference between them is large:

Most routers use “band steering”: one network name, and the router chooses the band per device. If your network has separate names, connect your laptop, TV, and phone to the 5 GHz network when they are in the same room as the router, and use 2.4 GHz for devices far away.

If your router broadcasts both bands under one name, make sure band steering is enabled — it is usually on by default in the Wi-Fi settings.

Step 5: Update the firmware — and retire ancient gear

Router firmware gets fixes for stability, performance, and security, but unlike phones, routers rarely update themselves. Log into the router (the address and password are usually on a sticker on the back) and check for a firmware update in the administration section.

The same is true of the hardware: a router from ten years ago has slower chips, older Wi-Fi standards, and weaker security. If your router is on Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n), upgrading to a Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 model is the single biggest hardware win for most homes — but do this only after trying the free steps above.

Step 6: Give heavy devices a cable

No Wi-Fi is as fast or as stable as a cable. Any device that stays in one place and does heavy streaming, downloading, or gaming should be wired:

  • Desktop computers
  • Game consoles and streaming boxes
  • Smart TVs (often the single biggest bandwidth consumer in a home)

A 10-meter ethernet cable is cheap and invisible when run behind furniture. For homes where you cannot pull a cable, powerline adapters (which reuse your electrical wiring as a network cable) or a Wi-Fi 6 mesh node with a wired port are good alternatives — powerline speeds vary with the age of the wiring, but are usually far more stable than a distant Wi-Fi connection.

Step 7: Tame the bandwidth hogs

A single unwatched service can silently eat most of your connection:

  • Cloud uploads — phone photo backup, OneDrive, iCloud and similar services constantly sync in the background. Set photo and video backup to run on Wi-Fi and at night, or when you are not using the network.
  • Windows Update and game downloads — set active hours so big downloads do not compete with your video call.
  • Streaming in 4K on several screens — one 4K stream uses roughly 15–25 Mbps. If you have a family streaming on three TVs plus a video call, the connection simply runs dry.

Many routers have QoS (Quality of Service) settings that can prioritize video calls and gaming over downloads — look for it in the advanced settings if your router supports it.

Step 8: Put smart-home gadgets on a guest network

Smart plugs, cameras, speakers, and doorbells are not speed problems — but they are often on 2.4 GHz (they need the range) and they constantly send small packets. Moving them to a separate guest network frees the main network for your phones, laptops, and TVs.

Step 9: Cover the dead zones — mesh or access points

If one corner of the home has no signal and the router is already centrally placed, you have two realistic options:

  • A mesh system — multiple nodes that share one network name and let you roam between them. Worth it for large homes or houses with thick walls.
  • Access points connected by cable (or powerline) — the most reliable coverage, often cheaper than mesh.

What usually does not help: cheap single-band repeaters that rebroadcast a weak signal. Repeaters typically cut the speed roughly in half, because they must listen and re-broadcast over the same airwaves.

Step 10: Reduce congestion on the channel

Wi-Fi is like a radio: neighbors on the same channel are noise. In a dense apartment building, the 2.4 GHz band is often saturated — channels 1, 6, and 11 carry everyone’s traffic.

The easiest fix: use 5 GHz whenever possible (step 4). If you must use 2.4 GHz, set the router to automatic channel selection and let it pick the least crowded one — or check the router’s wireless settings for a list of overlapping networks and pick a quiet channel manually.

The quick-win checklist

If you only have ten minutes, do this:

  1. Restart the router with the 30-second rule.
  2. Move it central, elevated, and away from metal, water, and the kitchen.
  3. Run a speed test with a cable — check you get what you pay for.
  4. Connect laptops and TVs to 5 GHz, not 2.4 GHz.
  5. Update the router firmware.
  6. Wire the TV or desktop with a cable.
