Create a plan with AI
Give your AI assistant this page’s basic URL, your room measurements and your flooring specifications. Ask it to read the AI plan-link guide and return a ready-to-open plan link. The URL uses readable JSON, so no special encoder or account is needed.
You can copy this prompt:
Read https://www.lejnel.com/flooring-url-guide.txt and create a flooring planner URL for my measurements. Ask me for any missing product installation requirements or room-shape connections. Do not guess them. Return a clickable link and explain the settings you used.
Then add your room sizes, board size, pack size and installation requirements. Open the returned link and check every measurement and setting before using the plan.
URL format: /tools/flooring/?plan= followed by URL-encoded JSON. Rooms use metres; board and installation settings use millimetres. Older saved links still work.
How to plan vinyl or laminate flooring cuts
- Enter your flooring product. Use the plank length and width in millimetres and the number of boards in a pack. Enter your cutting tool’s kerf separately from the board thickness.
- Measure each room. Enter wall-to-wall dimensions in metres, choose the laying direction, and join rectangular sections for an L-shaped or stepped room.
- Set the installation requirements. Use the manufacturer’s wall gap, minimum end-piece length, joint stagger and minimum edge-row width. Choose less waste or symmetrical edge rows for each room.
- Follow the visual cut plan. Review board lengths and width cuts, follow the coloured offcut links between rooms, then print the layouts or the full cutting instructions.
What this flooring calculator estimates
The planner estimates net floor area after wall gaps, boards, packs, reusable offcuts and cutting waste. It compares suggested room orders and starter cuts to help reduce waste across a house. It is a layout and cutting aid for straight-laid planks; it does not guarantee the lowest possible waste.
Flooring planner questions
Can I reuse laminate or vinyl offcuts in another room?
The planner shares compatible full-width offcuts between rooms when they are long enough and retain the required joining end. Use one flooring product and click profile throughout, and confirm that the manufacturer permits the suggested reuse. Narrow ripped strips and notched remnants are counted as waste.
Can I plan an L-shaped kitchen or hallway?
Yes. Build one room from up to six edge-connected rectangles. The outline follows the combined floor area, with wall gaps at the outside perimeter. Check the section positions against your actual room before following the cuts.
What is the difference between less waste and symmetry?
Less waste compares selected edge-row widths to reduce board use and retain useful offcuts. Symmetry balances the widths of the opposite edge rows across the room’s overall layout. Recesses and steps in a shaped room can still require different local cuts.
Does the pack estimate include spare boards?
No. The estimate rounds the suggested board count up to whole packs and excludes a separate spare-board allowance. Allow for damaged boards, installation errors, product variation and future repairs when deciding what to buy.
How do I save or print my flooring plan?
Bookmark the current page or copy its plan link to save your measurements and settings. Choose Print layouts only for the room diagrams, or Print full plan to include the row-by-row cutting instructions. Suggestions are recalculated when a saved link is reopened.

Before you cut
This is an estimating aid for separate rooms with straight, parallel boards. Non-rectangular rooms can be made from 1–6 edge-joined, non-overlapping rectangular sections. The connections show offcut transfers, not doorways or a continuous floor between rooms. It compares a selection of room orders and starter lengths; it does not guarantee the mathematical minimum.
Offcuts retain their original orientation: starter pieces keep the joining end for the next plank, and end pieces keep the end that joins the previous plank. Only full-width offcuts are saved. Ripped strips and remnants with no usable joining end count as waste. Edge rows follow your selected symmetry or waste setting; labels show finished piece sizes. Cut to fit after checking real walls.
Check your product’s click direction, permitted reuse, expansion gaps, stagger rules and minimum piece sizes. Shaped-room rows crossing a step use rectangular cutting blanks, trimmed to the shown outline. Their notched offcuts are counted as waste, not reused. This version does not model internal obstacles, diagonal or herringbone layouts, continuous doorway layouts between separate rooms, or packaging defects. Quantities exclude a spare-board allowance. Quick-Step’s laminate installation guidance illustrates why row widths and staggering matter; vinyl and other products may require different settings.
Use of this planner
The planner provides general planning suggestions, not professional installation advice or a verified site survey. Results may contain errors and are not a guarantee of fit, minimum waste, suitability or purchase quantity. You are responsible for checking the actual site, product instructions, safe working methods and every cut before proceeding. Seek a qualified installer’s advice when needed.
